Mayor visits kids art class
Mayor Paul Shewmaker visits studio art class to talk mayorship, cartoons
'It was awesome'

Simpsonville Mayor Paul Shewmaker made on Thursday an impromptu visit to a children's art class to talk about local government, art and his hobby as a cartoonist on Thursday. Simpsonville Arts Center studio tenant and owner of Make and Believe Artists Alicia Griffith invited Mayor Shewmaker on Oct. 5 to speak to her homeschool art class after learning that the Mayor is an amateur cartoonist. Mayor Shewmaker had a discussion with the students about his role as mayor in local government, their artwork and his hobby drawing cartoons about his experience as mayor.
"Speaking with Alicia's students was so much fun," Mayor Shewmaker said. "What Alicia brings to the Simpsonville Arts Center is exactly what we imagined for the Arts Center but even more. Talking with the kids about why they like art, what makes it fun and listening to Alicia and her joyous interaction with them—it was awesome. They recharged my batteries!"
After Mayor Shewmaker said goodbye and left the studio, Griffith scrapped her lesson plan for the day and instead had the students draw a one panel cartoon.
